Sage Counselling

Katherine Sage, M.A., M.Th., R.P.
Registered Psychotherapist
Certified Emotionally Focused Therapist

Welcome to Sage Counselling. I am a certified emotionally focused therapist with extensive training in couples counselling, infidelity, trauma, anxiety, depression, and major life changes.  I work with both couples and individuals.

I understand it can be difficult to begin therapy and I make every effort to provide a caring and respectful environment. My practice is inclusive, non-judgmental and deeply grounded in compassionate care.

I believe change is always possible. There is a path to greater happiness – to live life with more confidence and courage. If you are ready to make the changes you want, I’ll be happy to meet with you. A free 15-minute consultation is always available.

Although based in Waterloo, Ontario, I offer psychotherapy across the province. Due to the ongoing health risks of in-person therapy, sessions are still conducted virtually, through secure software.

Individual Therapy

I specialize in helping those struggling with anxiety, depression, trauma, relationship problems or ongoing grief. Through a variety of approaches, my goal is to help you discover a way to live with more confidence, freedom and joy.

Couples Counselling

As a couples therapist, I have been certified by the International Center for Excellence in Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT). This approach, often referred to as the “gold standard” of couples therapy, can give you new understanding of each other’s hopes and fears, as well as guided path towards building a happier and more secure relationship.

Emotionally Focused Individual Therapy

EFT for individuals (EFIT) is a natural extension of EFT. During individual counselling, I can help guide you through emotional moments that have shaped how you feel about yourself and others. We can discover how your past coping strategies continue to impact you in the present. This process can support real change with anxiety, depression and relationship problems. As always, the goal is to help you find the confidence and capacity to make the changes you want.

Trauma and PTSD

The ongoing effects of trauma and post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) can be devastating. Physical, sexual or emotional abuse can leave us feeling that we are broken inside. As we struggle to “get over” the experience, we may develop further complications, such anxiety, panic, depression and relationship problems.

I believe that we are not broken, only wounded, and that we can heal and live with more freedom and confidence. With skill and patience, you can discover how to lessen your reactions to old wounds, even the most painful ones, and bring about a greater sense of calm and control in your life.

Anxiety and Depression

Anxiety often gives us a feeling that we are not quite safe, even when we know there is no real danger. Our pounding hearts and sweaty palms may seem impossible to control. We may experience a constant fear of being judged; a belief that everyone can see our nervousness and that we will never find a way to relax.

Depression, on the other hand, is quite a different experience. We may no longer care what others think of us. We may feel numb, or grief-stricken, rather than anxious. We often see ourselves and the world around us in a negative, hopeless manner.

My holistic approach to anxiety and depression involves a deep exploration of the thoughts and feelings behind our emotional and behaviour patterns. I have extensive experience in mindfulness practices and working with the physical reactions that cause us to believe we are under threat. My goal is to help you develop a greater sense of calm, safety and belonging.

For this work, I draw upon many years of meditation and mindfulness practices. I am also trained and certified in various other somatic approaches, including trauma-informed yoga and practical applications of polyvagal theory.

Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT)

EFT, which has become widely known as the gold standard of couples therapy, is based on the breakthrough work of attachment science. This theory shows us how our past experiences with those we loved and trusted continues to shape the way we see ourselves and others. In a safe, structured manner, EFT provides practical steps to understanding why we respond the way we do and how to make the changes we long for.

Relationship Betrayal

Partners who have been betrayed by sexual infidelity often suffer from the effects of trauma. Their reactions typically follow a pattern of post-traumatic stress symptoms, which may include an inability to stop thinking about the betrayal; difficulty in sleeping, eating, or thinking clearly; an avoidance of people and places that might trigger a sense of pain or panic; a loss of self-esteem; intense emotions, including rage; depression, despair and more. For the betrayed, it can feel as if the centre of their life, their committed relationship, has become a threat.
